Guilty Crown is an animated series of 22 episodes. It’s about a teenage boy, Shu, who is trying to live his life after some hard times in the past. A virus was found that creates purple crystals on your body, and develops rapidly. It takes a 3 stages before it is uncure-able. The virus spread for a reason unknown to civilians of japan on December 25th, “Lost Christmas”. Shu is unaware of some of the things in his past, but he knows that he has a connection to them. He gains an incredible power, that allows him to reach into someone’s chest and pull out a weapon that shapes the person’s “heart”, (personality, characteristics). These are called Voids. He has to make the choice to help an underground society against the government of japan, using his power, or turn away from them, and allow the government to find them.
I think that the episodes towards the end were very messy at some points, but others were good. The first 11 episodes were fantastic, but- There were scenes were it was very long and drawn out, and it was a bit annoying. I guess that goes for the second half too.
Visually, it was amazing. The art and hard work animating put into it was absolutely spectacular. For a TV series I was amazed at how well animated and unique it was.
The story was very interesting, but if you don’t pay attention, or if you have very little patience, the story may not interest you. The whole apocalyptic future setting is very cliche these days, but I think it was well played and set up in this series.
Character development was VERY well done, and all the characters you see each have an episode or part where they get a little spotlight. If you had a favorite background character that deserves more love, I think they would have liked a role in guilty crown.
The music was amazing, with OP and ED themes by Supercell, a favorite group of mine.
Overall, Guilty Crown gets an 8.5 out of 10. Many people say that it was a horrible series, but I think if you are into Visually unique animation and art, you love creative music, and you want a story that makes you think, you will probably enjoy this series.
NOTE:
The ending and entire series tends to be very emotional and sad, so if you don’t enjoy sad stuff, and want a happy anime to watch, I think this anime may not be the best choice.
